Essay Instructions: This is to be an autobiographical sketch for admission to a masters of nursing program (advanced generalist masters) not to be confused with a masters of science in nursing. The following need to be addressed in the statement.
1.Reasons for pursuing the Masters in Nursing/Advanced Generalist Masters as a career
-I currently hold a bachelors in english literature. I had always considered nursing as a career, I currently have a friend in medical school, and another that is earning their doctor of nursing practice. My father passed away from cancer when I was seven years old, and I had to take care of my mother, and learn to take care of myself as she was severely depressed. When he was sick I learned how to allocate his medication and shots. Since he died I've always felt a deeper sense of compassion for those that are sick or injured after having seen what my father endured. After graduating from college I interned at morgan stanley, then went on to hold various banking positions (I will include a copy of my resume within these specifications requested). I was laid off October of 11, and decided to go into the healthcare field after discussing the experiences my friend who is currently a nurse had. I suppose I want to be in a profession that is actually helping people, and not selling them a product. I want to do something my father would be proud of me for, as I think of him every day.
2.Strengths you will bring to the profession of nursing
- I have held positions in sales, customer service, and administration. I suppose the strengths gained from that would be being able to communicate effectively, working well within a team to reach a goal, the ability to multi-task and organize time wisely, and problem solving before the issue is escalated. A lot of "soft" skills.
3. Career goals and methods used to investigate AGM role
 - My career goals would be to possibly in the future work in nursing administration. I would like to eventually get my doctor of nursing practitioner degree. I have always valued education as a tool to further, and enhance one's abilities.
As far as methods, I've done some research online, and also spoken at great length to a couple friends in the profession. One is a nurse that works in the ER currently getting her D.N.P and the other only has a bachelors, but works in sales teaching surgeons how to do surgery by use of animal cadavers. Whoever is writing this can expand or expunge on this as much as you'd like. I imagine the committee would like to see that a lot of research has been done on the topic so that one knows what they are getting themselves in to.
4.Description of volunteer and community service activities and life challenges
-I already described my fathers passing. Besides dealing with his passing, I also dealt with my severely depressed mother. I learned how to empathize and realize that some people have issues they cannot control, I learned how to rely on, and take care of myself as she spent most of the day in bed. When I was 17 I was sexually assaulted by my brother who had recently moved in, and later we learned he had developed paranoid schizoprenia He was sent to a group home and lives on government assistance. It was not until 7 years had gone by that I had been able to attend family functions he was at. Now I think it's just sad to see the state he's in, and I realize he was mentally ill and had no control over his actions. I went to college and lived on loans and pell grants, as my mother did not have much money. All of those loans are paid back, and I worked a part time job through most of college to help pay for my school expenses.
As far as volunteer experiences, while working at Best Buy I volunteered at the annual "relay for life" event we sponsored (for cancer). My role was to help set up the tents, help with food/snack set up, and help with the organization of people who had signed up. I worked this event for two years (08 and 09) I also volunteered at my local methodist church food pantry/food drives, and taught bible school over the summer for children ages 8-12 (06-10). After graduating from college I moved to a different state in 2010, currently I volunteer at the local church and help with set up for girls basketball/volleyball (my partner has an 11, and 13 year old both who play on the church team). I also provide baked goods monthly to a womens center, and am in the process of getting my dog trained to visit with senior citizens and provide them some comfort/happiness.

*Whoever is writing this, it should be written from the perspective of a 25 year old woman. I would have written it myself but I had a hard time in terms of how to organize/structure it and what details should be included/not included. As far as sources go, I only ask that if any research on the Advanced generalist masters degree is found/quoted/used that the source be cited properly. MLA or APA format is fine. Thank you.
